Gas Poisoning

Carbon monoxide, the type of gas expelled by cars is the gas most likely to be inhaled accidentally, leading to serious illness, or even death. Victims may be unaware of the problem because the gas is odourless and does not cause recognizable symptoms in the early stages of poisoning.

Look for:

  • If the victim is in an enclosed space, ventilate the area by opening all doors and windows, but avoid personal risk. If the victim is conscious, help her out of the contaminated space into fresh air.
  • Send someone to call for an ambulance immediately. Medical assessment is vitally important because serious complications can result from the inhalation of a toxic substance.
  • Drag an unconscious victim by the feet into fresh air. Turn victim to her side and open the airway and begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if necessary.
  • If the victim is conscious, allow her to rest in the fresh air until she feels better. Stay with her, keeping her under close observation, until the ambulance arrives.
