Dislocation
A dislocation is a very painful injury which occurs when a severe twist or wrench displaces a bone from its normal position at a joint. There may also be damage to nearby nerves and blood vessels which can cause serious complications. A dislocation may be associated with a fracture and should be treated as a possible fracture until a diagnosis is made.
The victim may complain of:
- Severe pain in and around the joint
- Inability to move the injured part
- Some loss of sensation
Look for:
- Obvious deformity and swelling around the joint
- Bruising
What you should do:
- Help the victim find a position in which the injured area can be supported to ease the pain. A dislocated shoulder, hip or elbow joint can be supported by pillows or blankets. DO NOT try to replace the dislocated bones because further damage and complications can occur.
- For a dislocated finger, use soft padding to support the injury. Wrap a bandage lightly in place unless this is more painful. Do not apply firm pressure because of the risk of further damage to nerves and blood vessels. Seek medical advice immediately because of the risk of complications. If the victim is in severe pain, call for an ambulance as soon as possible.
