Ligtning Strike
During an electrical storm, lightning strikes are an ever-present risk. When a person is struck and survives, serious burns are likely. As with electrical burns, there will be an entry burn and an exit burn. The exit burn is usually the more serious of the two.
Look for:
- A collapsed, non-breathing victim
- Confusion and/or memory loss, should the victim be conscious
- Temporary loss of hearing or vision
- Various injuries including burns
What you should do:
- If any clothing is on fire or smouldering, the flames should be smothered with a coat or doused with water immediately.
- Call for an ambulance as soon as possible.
- If the victim is unconscious, turn her onto her side to clear the airway. Be prepared to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation if necessary.
- If the victim is conscious, help her to lie down. Control any bleeding with a pressure pad. Look for entry and exit burns, especially on the feet, and cover any wound with a sterile dressing. If cold water is available, apply a compress to reduce the pain.
